MetaBin development
The algorithm was written in Perl (version 5.10.1) and the dendrogram images were generated using the Perl GD module. The web-server was developed using the Apache HTTP Server (Version 2.2.8). Client-side scripting was done using XHTML, JavaScript, and AJAX; and server-side scripting was done using PHP and XML. Software packaging was done using the PAR Packager (PAR-Packer-1.002) and executables were generated for Mac, Linux, and Windows with compatibility for both 32-bit and 64-bit architecture.
How to install
We have pre-compiled the executables for Windows, Linux/Unix, and Mac operating systems. Please download the package specific for your system and follow these installation steps.
After downloading, uncompress the package by typing:
tar xvfz metabinv1.0.tar.gz

A directory named metabinv1.0 will be created containing the database and executables listed below.
metabinv1.0/metabin metabinv1.0/data/tax.db

Updating the taxonomic information

Users can update the taxonomy database by downloading the ‘taxdump.tar.gz’ database file from NCBI taxonomy ( ftp://ftp.ncbi.nih.gov/pub/taxonomy ) using the '-f' option as shown below.

./metabin -f <path of the directory containing nodes.dmp and names.dmp files>

This will generate a ‘tax.db’ database file in the 'data' directory.

Prerequisites for successful installation
GD library libgd 2.0.28 or higher (https://bitbucket.org/libgd/gd-libgd/downloads).
BLAT - Program for Alignment (http://genome-test.cse.ucsc.edu/~kent/exe/).
To run MetaBin on windows using Blat as the alignment program, you need to install Cygwin (http://www.cygwin.com/) and run MetaBin in the Cygwin environment (shell).
